It may still be baltic outside but that hasn't stopped me from dreaming of spring days where bare legs, loafers and easy cotton pieces are all you need. As always I am drawn to simple, slightly preppy basics with a twist - a polo shirt dress in neon, oversized pinafores, silky slips, ankle socks and tailored linen trousers. La Garconne and Topshop Boutique are both very very good at this kind of aesthetic and this season is no exception. The mood of Sofia Coppola's ad campaign for Marni x H&M is also perfect - all long, hot, lazy days and lush prints.

Currently I am living in a state of chaos. My bathroom is being totally refurbished and so I have 12 -14 working days ahead of me with no shower at home (luckily we still have a working toilet, in case you were wondering). I am a creature of habit and the removal of an integral part of my daily routine is making me a little anxious and it has only been two days. I find myself seeking out opportunities for showers in every possible place including local leisure centres, friends' houses and even train stations. To take my mind off the situation I am escaping into the black hole of the internet and being drawn toward all that is ordered, structured and serene.

This week I've also been baking my own bread (I used the Easy Little Bread recipe from 101 Recipes and the name fits, it is really easy), eating lots of cabbage (it is in season now and is sooooo good. boiled in water with a bit of stock, add kale and other vegetables as desired. mmmmmm) and have taken up ballet again after far too long.

Happy 2012! I've spent the last few weeks since my last post celebrating Christmas in London. I roasted a chicken for the first time which made me feel like a grown up. Other Christmas activities included a mid-morning run, watching Love Actually and getting drunk on champagne. Boxing Day I went to Paris for a wee break with my boyfriend and his little sister who is visiting. We ate far too many pastries, wandered the streets, visited tourist attractions, discovered new favourite places and revisited old haunts. Then I had food poisoning for five days, including New Years Eve, which was truly unpleasant and probably too much information but I am suspicious of blogs that present life as always perfect and happy and shiny.

Now I am recovered I feel like the year has finally begun and so I've been reflecting on the past year, a year in which I lived in Paris, Glasgow and London, with a quick trip back home to Australia in between, graduated triumphantly and then fell into a dark hole of self doubt after struggling to get work of any kind (let alone something vaguely related to my field), and eventually found a lovely job and settled into life in the capital. It was also the year I finally figured out what I want to do with my life.

For this year my resolutions are simple. I want to be extra thrifty and save, I want to eat well using mostly seasonal ingredients from the farmer's market, I want to make more things myself (from cards to cakes to coffee), I want to continue exploring London in my spare time, I want to read everyday (real books not on the internet), I want to take serious steps in my work life. I also want to stop thinking so much and listen to my instincts and impulses a little more.

One day I would really love a home just like this. With faded paint and bare concrete, hanging potted plants, antique rugs, grand windows, lots of bookshelves, a long soft couch for reclining and reading and of course a lovely feline companion. A house for hosting dinner parties, catch ups over tea, for working, relaxing, living.

I would jump at the chance to live in a place like this, but somehow I am also content with where I am now, in a cosy but slightly chaotic sharehouse that reflects my current stage of my life. I am no where near where I want to be professionally. I still have lots of ladders to climb up and down, challenges to face, people to meet, decisions to make, all that. Just as it takes time to build a career, it is going to take time to build a home of my own. Time and lots of work. So for now I am embracing the flaws (and I mean real flaws, not artfully distressed walls like above) like the ramshackle collection of furniture no one else wants, the bad carpet, the ugly set of drawers and the shower with a mind of its own, and dreaming of that one day.

After wrapping hundreds of presents at work I have turned into a wrapping machine and now want to get some lovely linen and cotton fabrics so I can wrap my lunch to take to work, wrap gifts for my own loved ones and wrap up my summer clothes that are in storage for the winter. This is also a new thing for me - I've never put away clothing for a season as Melbourne's weather is mild and varied throughout the year so just about everything is used all year round. London is a different story and I am enjoying the distinct seasons and the changes in my routine, in clothing, in food, as the temperature drops.

I've been absorbing a lot of information the past week, but not really processing or responding to any of it. I was going to write 'inspiration' instead of information, but wanted to make a distinction between the act of mindlessly consuming an endless stream of images and ideas and the act of really engaging with content. Sometimes the internet is too much. I think that is why I started this blog, to take stock and give myself a space to collate all the things that I am really drawn to, the things I want to look back on and reference later. Essentially I was, and still am, tired of feeling like I am falling down the rabbit hole when browsing the world wide web. I am now aiming to approach the internet with a more careful, considered and structured attitude.

With that in mind, I've really been enjoying slowly going through the archives of Hunter Gatherer and I'm Revolting this week. Also reading lots of interesting articles found on Arts & Letters Daily (via So Much To Tell You). I was also really excited this week to discover Fashionpolish (via Discotheque Confusion) and Sarah from the Sun (via Childhood Flames). I am also loving the return of Vliin. Falling down the rabbit hole is perhaps worth it after all.

I recently discovered Kinfolk - a magazine that is the result of a collaboration between over forty artists and which focuses on entertaining and more specifically simple, casual, intimate, small-scale entertaining with an emphasis on the the home, on friendship, on nature and on sharing. The well-written, interesting articles are accompanied by beautiful photographs and the whole thing gives you a warm fuzzy feeling (and I'm sure this feeling is amplified when it is read in hard-copy rather than online). Volume One was released this past summer and I am eagerly awaiting a reprint of that issue as well as the next volume.

From Brian Ferry's musing on the joy of going to a coffee shop alone, to Nikole Herriott and Tara O'Brady's perfect ingredients, and recipes, for a weekday catch-up, Youngna Park's tribute to the humble cloth napkin and Sarah Winward's top tips for flower arranging, the magazine is filled with ideas, information and inspiration. I am now super keen to host a dinner party, or a brunch, or a picnic, or all of the above and more - which I think is the intention.

Right now I'm looking forward to getting a copy of the latest issue of Apartmento, enjoying the chill in the air and looking forward to wearing even more layers just like this girl shot by Anne Bernecker, admiring this Pelican Avenue jumper on the No.6 blog and the beautiful photographs over at Tourist magazine, and dreaming of Estelle Deve rings at My Chameleon, Topshop Boutique jumpers and Dieppa Restrepo cali portland brandy brogues (along with everything else) at Maryam Nassir Zadeh.

I've also been reading a lot about food and nutrition over at The Happiness Cocktail blog and testing out recipes from Yotam Ottolenghi's book Plenty as well as these green vegetable recipes from Lola is Beauty. In the past few months I've bought pretty much all my vegetables at the farmer's market and apart from the benefits of supporting farmers, eating locally grown food and making me feel very virtuous/smug, they really taste so much better than anything you can find in the supermarket and are really cheap if you plan your meals before you arrive. Plus the sellers are always really friendly, know their products inside and out and are happy to share that information with people like me who ask silly questions like 'What is that called?' while pointing to piles of unfamiliar produce (and are very polite in answering these questions, even though I can tell the vegetables I have never seen before are obviously quite commonplace in this country...oops).

I have also been enjoying reading and watching The Slap (a novel that has been turned into a mini series currently airing on BBC4 - check it out on iPlayer!). I started watching the show before I picked up the book, which I think is a bit of a mistake as now I can't get the actors out of my head, but nevertheless it is very very good drama - thought-provoking, moving, beautifully shot and a refreshing take on Australian suburbia, a kind of foil to shows like Neighbours.

Emma Gleason's (aka author of the amazing Rag Pony) Graduate Collection via her blog.

I am in love with this collection. The use of colour, the cut of the trousers, the understated, casual mood, the beautiful fabrics (as far as I can tell from the photos), the socks with sandals, everything is done well. I love how the collection hints at her favourite designers and inspirations as seen on her blog (ie. Sheri Muji, Karen Walker, Jil Sander, uniforms, restraint etc.) but takes them to another level that is entirely her own. Her aim was to explore 'comfort and familiarity through garments that have a significance to me' and to make the wearer feel that ease and happiness, and I think she has succeeded with flying colours. Who wouldn't be happy wandering around town in a lovely yellow slouchy jacket and deep red trousers? I can't wait to see what she does next (and for now am really hoping this goes into production!).

Anyone who has watched the incredible Danish series The Killing, or read the latest issue of The Gentlewoman, will be familiar with Sofia Grobel and her character Sarah Lund's Faroese jumper (available from Gudren & Gudren). Attracting lots of attention, the costume choice for Lund added complexity and subtlety to the character. The traditional, soft, hand-made jumper which Lund wears repeatedly contrasted wonderfully with her focused-to-the-point-of-obsession work ethic. It spoke of a woman who is practical and ready for anything, yet also someone who doesn't need to power dress, who can assert herself in other ways and isn't trying to prove anything. The humble woolen jumper strikes again.

I am really enjoying the emergence of 'what's in your wardrobe' sites that document the inspirations and wardrobes of cool ladies.

Style Like U was one of the pioneers of this kind of website, and I really loved it in the early days. It has gone on to gain huge exposure and much success (including a book deal) for the creators, a sign of just how curious we are about peeping into the lives of others and in learning about the personal style of people through alternate channels to traditional fashion publications. I hate to be one of those people that nostalgically exclaims something was much better before it gained mainstream exposure but in recent times Style Like U has felt a little overwhelming and I've not visited the site for a while. Luckily there are many others popping up, like Closet Visit and The Coveteur, which take the original idea of Style Like U and add their own twist.

It's an interesting time for style documentation. We are seemingly obsessed with what other people are wearing, how they are living, what they are eating, where they are travelling. I'm all for this kind of sharing, it allows us to satisfy our voyeuristic desires and to learn about people, places, products and more importantly ideas that we may never have encountered otherwise. But like others I'm also wary of what kinds of images/lifestyles are being presented. Stevie, author of Discotheque Confusion, recently posted a brilliant examination of the evolution of street style which brings up many interesting points particularly about the role of these kinds of sites in perpetuating consumerism and essentially, making us want more stuff. This article written by Chelsea Fagan for Thought Catalog (found via Stop It Right Now) is another great read on the topic, with hilarious yet accurate observations of what much 'street style' has become.

I suppose with that said, it is still encouraging that thanks to the power of the internet, the established and commercialised street style sites sit alongside the smaller, emerging and niche ones, that they are all out there waiting to be discovered. It is important to ask these questions, to delve beneath the surface of what we read and watch and look at the motives and ideologies behind them. To recognise the purpose of these sites, and then interact with them in our own way.

With all that in mind, it is wonderful that all these resources are available. That I can sit in my living room on a grey Sunday afternoon and admire the styles of women who live on the other side of the world.

The styling in Goodhood's AW11 Lookbook is wonderful. It is just right - it isn't too edgy, too scruffy, too slouchy, too matchy-matchy or too tomboy, but combines hints of all these elements to create really clever outfits that look comfortable, practical and still very cool. But not too cool.

I can also vouch for their exceptional customer service; I bought an Arnsdorf shirt from them a while back and it arrived with lightning speed. It's starting to get a little chilly here so some chunky socks and knits to throw on over dresses and shirts would be very welcome additions to my wardrobe too.

I discovered Malin Elmlid's blog through her feature on Freunde von Freunden. Having previously worked for Wood Wood she is now a Sales Manager for Levis, but more importantly in her free time she blogs about 'what to do when it is time off' and runs the Bread Exchange, a project in which she bakes amazing sourdough and trades it for anything else (but not money).

Not only is her bartering project genius, but I also love her approach to life and how she challenges the idea that our day jobs are what determines who we are. It is so inspiring to see someone who places an emphasis on our lives beyond the 9-5 grind, because let's be honest, not everyone can survive as freelance artists/bloggers/consultants and for most, taking on a full-time job is a necessity at some point. Having graduated earlier this year and now properly in the workforce, it has taken me a while to get into the habit of setting aside time for things outside of work. People like Malin remind me to take that time - to go running, take a dance class, cook a new dish, read a book (thanks for all your suggestions in the last post!), start a new project.

Recently I finished reading The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. It took me ages to finish - I kept stopping and starting but once I got into I tore through it and remembered why I love literature (and chose to study it!). I now miss the required readings I was handed each week, which forced me to look at and learn things I may never have discovered on my own. So, having left student life, I turn to all 99 of you out there in the great world wide web for inspiration - what should I read? Please suggest anything - there is nothing too outrageous, too classic, too ancient, too contemporary, too romantic, too ironic, too depressing - I am open to all.

A Detacher SS 12 via Vogue UK

I really loved the latest collection from New York label A Detacher and am already dreaming of patched denim and muted polka dot fabrics for next summer. Designer Mona Kowalska is truly gifted at creating tailored, sophisticated pieces that have unexpected (but never over the top) details. This collection was inspired by grandmothers, and really who doesn't want to look like a cool grandmother? I sure do, and think about my own beloved gran when I get dressed each day, attempting to channel even just an inch of her glamour and class. A little bit of A Detacher would make my attempts much, much easier.

Quick outfit post from the Topshop changing rooms last Friday when I indulged in some browsing in real life for the first time in a long time. Although, as usual I was quickly overwhelmed and retreated to the Edited section which was much more peaceful (and better yet had no line for the changing rooms - hoorah!). I tried on this Boutique Alpaca Bomber jacket (image one). It is really lovely in real life, a beautiful deep green/grey/navy and the texture is really luxurious - unfortunately the price is too, but it was fun trying things on anyway.

Ahhh Asos White - where have you been? After an amazing AW10, you kinda went a bit weird during summer, but it is so good to see you back on track. Peg leg trousers! Burgundy knits! Metallic tees! Boxy shapes! I want you all.

For me, Asos White sits alongside brands like Cos and Topshop Boutique. They all deliver pieces that are modern, well made and most importantly well priced, that allow the wearer to subtly hint at high fashion trends while still looking understated and not like you spend most of your time thinking about fashion (even if, like me, you do). I also love how most of the collection would look just as great in casual, lo-fi outfits worn with New Balance and denim, as with a pair of Acne Pistol boots and a Celine bag.

Just a few snaps from my recent holiday in Turkey. I stayed in Olympos, a small town south of Antalya, where mountains and ancient ruins meet the ocean. Days were spent swimming, lying in the sun, watching the turtles which nest nearby, eating delicious home-made Turkish food, drinking banana smoothies and lazing about in the outdoor hut lounges. It was lovely to relax and rest in place so beautiful I thought for a moment I'd landed in some kind of Utopia (until I found this guy in the bathroom).

It was also nice to spend time in a place completely detached from fashuuun, where it was all about comfort and ease in the heat rather than being on trend. Although never fear, despite pretty much wearing a bikini the entire time I still had clothing on my mind. The older Turkish ladies provided much sartorial inspiration in their clashing printed outfits, wearing easy cotton trousers, flowing blouses and skillfully draped headwraps. Seeing this Turban Tying Tute by Julia from Dagmar Rousset, featured on the Pocketto website reminded me again just how great head scarves can look. In fantasy land I would be trying this out with a Charlotte Linton scarf. They are stocked at Couverture (for the sake of transparency, yep that is where I work and yep we stock some amazing stuff) and are even more stunning in real life.

A couple of weeks ago between going to Australia and Turkey, I spent a couple of days in Paris visiting old haunts, eating many pastries, stocking up on Mariage Frere tea, checking out Merci (which I somehow neglected to see during my exchange), pining over Isabel Marant and APC, and almost having my iphone stolen by a troupe of gypsy children (they did the old distract and grab trick while I was in McDonalds using free wi-fi. I only noticed it was gone after they had left, but luckily they hadn't gotten far. I went into a trance, followed them and managed to get out the words 'Vous avez mon iphone!' to which the leader rolled her eyes and reluctantly pulled it out of her trousers. Then I returned to McDonalds and finished my fries with shaking hands).

In between the food, shopping and drama, I also went to the Hussein Chalayan exhibition at Les Arts Décoratifs. It was excellently curated, with dark corridors connecting garments and videos spanning Chalayan's entire career. It was an enchanting experience wandering around as his designs emerged from the shadows, and remembering just how innovative and visionary his work is. Blending theatre, politics, science, anthropology and technology, it was a reminder of the potential of fashion to be thought-provoking, challenging and breath-taking all at once. All in all I highly recommend checking it out if you are in Paris sometime between now and November 13th.

Oh hey there little blog, how are you? Long time no see. Unfortunately this is really just a token nod of acknowledgement, a passing wave in the corridor rather than a d&m catch-up chat over a coffee, for tomorrow I am departing again - firstly to Edinburgh where I am seeing Arcade Fire perform at the Castle, and then to Turkey where I intend to be at one with the sun and sand for eight whole days. I'm looking forward to returning to blogging more regularly, but for now am giddy with excitement over a holiday where the plan is to have no plans.

The past few weeks have been a little crazy, and as such I have many things I want to share but need more time to properly articulate. So for now here are some vague ideas/observations that have been swirling around in my head:

- Melbourne is amazing. I always knew my hometown was pretty cool, but it is only since spending time away that I have really come to appreciate just how lucky I am to have been born and bred there. Upon touching down at 6am on a Sunday, my first move was to stave off jet lag by heading over to Camberwell Market with my parents for a catch up over coffee and a good ol' rifle through all manner of secondhand goods. The sun was high in the sky, the air was crisp, and it really was one of those perfect Melbourne winter days. Afterwards, we drove to the beach and ate proper, delicious, fresh fish and chips, and watched people rollerblading and running and walking their dogs. It was such a carefree, joyful moment that I almost forgot it was meant to be winter.

- Seven short days later I picked up The Australian Weekend Magazine as I boarded the plane 'home' and came across this article by Nikki Gemmell, who recently returned to Australia after living and raising her children in London for many years. While her experience that "London stole my optimism, Australia has restored it" is far from my own (although I do acknowledge that I am just a twenty-something still in that naive, honeymoon phase of living abroad, and of course everyone experiences cities in a different way), her words still resonated with me. Yes, the article presents a nostalgic, sentimentalised vision of Australia seen through rose-tinted glasses (although that Australia does exist too - see above for such a moment), but there is still truth to be found in that feeling of being back in the place where we grew up, surrounded by the familiar and the familial.

- Speaking of which, thank you for your kind comments about my dear Gran's passing. She was a truly wonderful woman and her funeral was as lovely as such an event can be. It was eye-opening hearing so many of her friends speak of their memories of her, and realising just how many characteristics she passed on to me. Also it was thrilling to discover little bits of 'trivia' about her, like that she eloped with my Grandpa. They were swept up in a wave of euphoria and spontaneity, until they realised they would eventually have to tell my Gran's parents who would surely disapprove. Luckily this was during the War (1941 to be exact) and at that time no one verified the bride and groom's marital status before a wedding, so they were able to declare themselves 'bachelor and spinster' (it actually says this on the wedding certificate!) and be re-married, publicly, a few months later with no one any the wiser.

- Also my time back home reminded me of just how cool Melbourne girls are, with their layered, textured, vintage-mixed-with-Alpha 60 style. Melbourne stores are also really cool, and I finally visited Dagmar Rousset, which I wrote about here, where picked up a copy of Pocketto (a wonderful read) and also visited Mr Kitly, which has a lovely selection of zines, Japanese ceramics, handmade jewellery, plants and an excellent gallery.

Well that is enough patriotism and dear-diary ramblings for one day, especially as this was apparently just a stop-over post. Back soon!

In the past few weeks while I've been away from blogging, I've moved apartments, turned a year older, arranged many many flowers as part of my job, enjoyed checking out the new collection at Cos, bought a Mina Perhonen top with some of my birthday money (thanks Mum!), started braiding my hair and wearing it pinned up in an attempt to get through that awkward hair length stage that comes with growing out a bad haircut and booked a last-minute trip back to Melbourne to attend my dear gran's funeral next week. It's going to be a crazy month, with my quick trip back to Australia followed by a few days in Paris, a night in Edinburgh to see the Arcade Fire at the Castle and then ten days in Turkey.

It's been a year since I was back in my hometown, so Melbournians I ask, what have I been missing? I'll have a few days free and would love to know any new cafes/shops/exhibitions I have to check out.

OnSunday I went to Brixton Village to see the Minus Sun launch exhibition at Circus.Displayed on hand-made cardboard dolls with articulated limbs that were partlyinspired by the photographic works of Hans Bellmer, the collection was curatedin a carefully considered way that invited, and even seduced, the viewer tofocus on the details. Each item has been lovingly hand-made andembroidered by the designer, Yuka Maeda. The result is stunning, withcrochet-trimmed lingerie hanging alongside resin-encased embroidery rings, andpleated linen pinafore style dresses next to cleverly illustrated vests thatare intended to teach the next generation the traditional techniques Yuka hasemployed. Besides being beautiful examples of crafts that are being lost, Yukahas embedded another layer into the garments by creating a narrative in whicheach item plays a role. This story is recorded in an exquisite fabric book thatis hand-written and hand-embroidered.

Hereis the synopsis from the Minus Sun website:

No.0 is a 17-year-old girl who has been 17for almost 7 years. She has 9 friends, who are numbered No.1~No.9. They havebeen living together for a long time. They all look similar to each other; longdark hair, fair skin, and petite figures. Though they look so much alike, No.0makes clothes for them according to their unique personalities. Every day, sheenjoys dressing the girls in the morning and undressing them at night. However,strange things start to happen when she decides to become 24 on her nextbirthday. One by one, her friends go missing until only No.0 herself is left.When she turns 24, she discovers the hopeless truth that her best friendsdidn’t exist after all and all of them were her split personalities whichbecame her imaginary friends in her refusal to grow up.

TheMinusSun collection is reminiscent of antique clothing, with it's limitedpalette, exceptional craftsmanship and use of natural materials such as calicoand linen. Yet there is something distinctly modern, and even cinematic, aboutYuka's approach to production and presentation. Her designs mix sexuality withinnocence, recalling early collections by Tao for Comme des Garcons, while thedark undertones of the narrative that holds the collection together reminded meof a Haruki Murakami novel.

Allin all a highly recommended exhibition and a label definitely worth watching. MinusSun is being featured at Circus until July 22nd, so be quick! In caseyou need another excuse to visit, Brixton Village is open late Thursdays until10pm and there are a heap of wonderful and affordable restaurants, so check itout!

More lo-fi (or more accurately lazy - forgive me Jackie!) iphone snaps from this weekend.

I've been trawling through old issues of Apartmento and dreaming of antique rugs and bathtubs, cave dwellings, shearling, potted plants on old stools, cacti and yellow jumpsuits. I also went back to the Barbican for a quick wander after visiting nearby cafe St.Ali in Clerkenwell for a taste of home and good coffee (the original and only other St.Ali cafe is in Melbourne). I've also been enjoying the grey weather London is experiencing as it is giving me lots of opportunities to wear my new A.P.C raincoat which I recently bought on sale at Urban Outfitters. Today I also got to pick out my staff clothing allowance at work, a sneak peek of which you can see in the second last photo. With my newly acquired staff discount (hoorah for finishing probation!) I bought some MT Tape which I am looking forward to using on letters to friends back home.

Following on from my recent post about cool girls, I wanted to write about another cool girl from Melbourne, Julia. She was my first, and best, French teacher ever and besides providing me with weekly style entertainment in the form of her amazing outfits, she also owns a boutique in Fitzroy called Dagmar Rousset.

I haven't visited the store since it changed locations from Brunswick, but from the photos I've seen and the designers Julia has chosen to stock, I can tell you it is a must visit if you are in Melbourne. From Emma the Shoemaker (whose glorious handmade shoes I pined over here), to ALL Knitwear, Osborne Shoes, Opening Ceremony and emerging label MISU a Barbe (who I posted about here), Julia has selected a collection of clothing and objets d'art that perfectly reflect her own vibrant personal style.

What is even more exciting is that Julia is a self-declared fashion outsider who, with no retail or fashion background, is "having a lot of fun making it up as she goes along". Besides housing so many desirable things, Dagmar Rousset is also home to French language classes in the evenings.

I am in love with Time's Up Vintage, which I recently re-discovered (having first stumbling upon it a few months ago and promptly forgetting all about it) thanks to Lena at Cut the Cute. From Moschino, Versace and Missoni, to 1920s lace blouses and 80s mint trousers, if I had cash to burn this is one of the first places I would be heading. For now I'll just enjoy the beautiful styling and keep polka dot prints, yellow knits and pale blue jumpsuits in mind next time I'm at the charity shop.

Recently I've been clearing out my closet which has been quite theraputic. Although with that said I have also bought a few new items recently to refresh my wardrobe and must say adding is almost as theraputic as subtracting. A few key items from A.P.C, Wood Wood and PAM, some new comfortable flats and, as Dead Fleurette would describe, an 'inexplicable desire' purchase in the name of an Ikou Tschuss scarf from S/S 09 which was heavily reduced at work, all of which I will show soon. I feel somehow lighter, having replaced the many old with a few, carefully selected new.

I've also been enjoying peeking behind the scenes of the Ikou Tschuss studio via Sight Unseen which has had me obsessing over colour, I've been admiring the work of LCF graduate Mengyi Hu who has had me dreaming of texture, and I've been eyeing off Teema crockery at Selfridges. But the vast majority of my time has been spent looking for a flat after the one I had lined up fell through. I cannot wait to settle.

I really love the colour combinations, not to mention the backpacks, in these images. I want a Kanken backpack (just like all the cool blog girls - Miss Woo I'm looking at you) although have yet to narrow down which colour. I also want to incorporate more colour into my wardrobe (and my home), but it is so difficult to find items in lovely shades that are also made out of good quality fabrics and fit well (and are in my price range). Although there is something very satisfying about holding out, and searching and searching for the perfect item rather than settling for mediocrity. I need to follow my own advice more often.

In other news I am currently wishing I could fly back to Melbourne to check out the Bless No. 38 Windowgarden at Craft Victoria in collaboration with PAM. The exhibition sounds incredible, with a series of plants, objects and products carefully placed around the space. According to Craft Victoria, the exhibition will function as " 'made-to-measure' garden spaces". I'm really excited about this, and I can't even see it so if you are in Melbourne between June 17th and July 30th check it out (and report back please!).

Speaking of plants, I am loving my herb garden (hi there basil, chives, mint, oregano and rosemary. thanks for making my food taste better). Next I want to buy some cacti and succulents (see photo above).

Finally, in work-related news, I have picked my three favourite items over at the Couverture shop blog, so check it out, but please ignore my ugly mug and focus on the delightful products.

I've been lusting over this PAM top from The Goodhood Store (sold out) and PAM moccasins from Someday, this A.P.C cap from Creatures of Comfort, these No.6 animal print clogs and this Anntian hand printed top from Creatures of Comfort, admiring these amazing origami shirt spare button cases made by my friend Jackie who blogs at My Mum Made, wishing I was wearing this great outfit from Mr. Newton, visiting Nordic Bakery (image via Think Silly) and wishing I had the money to buy a Teema mug and tray.

Soon I am moving again, but this time not so far, just to a nicer, quieter flat. I was getting used to living as a nomad, but I can't deny that it will be a huge relief to stay in the same room, same house, same postcode, same city, for more than a few months. I am looking forward to old wooden floorboards, evenings in the courtyard, sitting, eating and chatting at an actual dining table rather than hunched over on the couch with a plate balanced on my knees, to quiet nights away from the hustle and bustle of the main road.

I have so many things to post about I don't even know where to begin, but this week I am getting back on track.

I can't believe it has taken me so long to discover Aimee's amazing blog Cavaan. She is one of the creators of the wonderful Pocketto magazine, along with Emma from This is a Dialogue (and former author of Aus Style). She is also a really really good photographer, and wears very inspiring outfits - see above for evidence. Emma also wears and styles cool outfits, and draws really cool pictures.

This is probably going to sound lame/patronising/sappy but it makes me so happy to see intelligent, creative young women working on such exciting projects. It is so rare, and refreshing, to find people who don't just sit around talking, smoking, drinking and pretending to be 'arty' but who actually put in the hardwork that is required to transform fluffy ideas from hot air into something tangible. (Although that isn't to say that talking, smoking and drinking can't be part of this process, but successful artists in any field know that in between sessions there needs to be a whole lot of work done).

Having followed Emma's blog Aus Style and the progress of Pocketto for a couple years now I'm really looking forward to watching it develop further, and seeing what else these two lovely ladies come up with. The fact they are both based in my hometown of Melbourne is also really cool (although they both also love to travel, and take stunning photos while doing it).

Another example of a cool girl doing cool things is Kat George, who is originally from Melbourne but now based in New York. She used to write a fashion blog called Style Lines which is sadly no more, but while it lasted it was really funny, clever and aesthetically pleasing at the same time - a rare combination. Anyway, she now has a writing blog called kat(G)litter where she posts hilarious and heart-warming articles about life in New York, dating, and all our favourite late 90s/early 00s icons such as her recent '10 lessons as sung by the Spice Girls' post.

All in all, these are the kind of people that make me want to get up and do things.

There is something so comforting, and slightly wrong, about shoes originally intended for indoor-only use being adopted for everyday. Rather than trying to avoid the 'retiree escaping from nursing home' connotations, if I owned any of these I would turn up the grandpa style as much as possible and ideally wear them with some cotton tapered trousers and a button-down shirt, or loose-fit shorts with an old striped tee. Basically wearing anything that verges on looking like (or actually being) pyjamas. Sleepwear (and not the glamorous, silk, vintage worn in the 'boudoir' kind) is really inspiring me lately. I guess it is the ease, the comfort, the practicality and the casualness of such garments, not to mention the use of lovely fabrics like striped cotton and linen, that is so appealing. I'm thinking shirts, shorts, tapered trousers and tunics in cotton, linen and soft chambray, either plain, striped or checked, or even with subtle embroidery.

I've been a bad blogger, but by the sounds of things Blogger has been up to no good too so I guess my timing worked out well. Lately I've tried to establish some kind of routine in my life, but it has been quite difficult. Half of my belongings (and my better half) are still in Glasgow, so I've been making do with what I have while waiting until next weekend when I am catching the train up, packing and then driving back down. Not looking forward to the manic packing that is ahead, but very excited about the road trip and getting out of the city for a few days.

I've had a great few weeks at work and have been lucky enough to meet some really cool people, including the editors of So-En (those of you who have read my blog for a while will know just how much I love this mag) who came in recently (they featured the store I work in a few issues back). Also for Australian readers out there, Kate Ritchie came into the store the other day! After picking up on my accent (and also probably overhearing my excited whispers of 'ahhh she is famous in Australia..she was on Home & Away...it is SALLY' to my colleague) we had a chat about Melbourne and London and coffee. I never really even watched Home & Away, but it was still pretty cool to meet a famous Aussie on the other side of the world.

I'm really loving all the beautiful prints that are around at the moment, in particular this Hydrangea print dress by Karen Walker which reminds me of my dear gran who loves her gardening as much as she loves the beach. I have a photograph of her posing by the sea, taken when she was around my age, decked out in typical, glamorous 30s swimwear (she is very old). It's from before colour photography was available to the masses, and has been hand coloured to highlight her red lipstick. She was such a babe (still is).

I'm finally back after settling in to life in London. Recently I've been loving all the bank holidays and sunshine, which in turn has got me thinking about how to best turn the roofspace outside the window in my new place into an outdoor garden/terrace area, which is turn has had me researching my plant options at the Columbia Road Flower Market. I've been thinking more about homewares than clothing, considering which herbs, flowers, plates and lamps to buy, although I have been dreaming of these A Détacher wedge sandals and shorts at work, and really want to inject some colours, like mint, yellow, pink, into my wardrobe. But, truth be told I am more interested in saving for trip to Turkey later in the year than spending my few spare pennies on clothing. Besides planning a few necessary, basic purchases to replace old worn items (ie. some black trousers, new brogues, plain tee), for the time being I'm focusing my energy on getting rid of what I haven't worn lately before I add anything else. I'm lapping up the feeling of potential that the weather, the wedding and my own relocation have created. I feel like a schoolkid on the first day of summer holidays, filled with excitement at the possibilities ahead.

So, what has been exciting you lately? And for anyone out there with a city gardens, any tips?

Ikou-Tschüss

Recently I discovered Swiss-based label Ikou-Tschüss, created by Guya Marini and Carmen D'Apollonio. The duo create amazing knitted pieces that are all handmade in their studio in Zurich. According to their website, the label began when Carmen's scarf flew off her neck while she was bike riding. In response, they started making silk scarves with hand-knitted edges to weigh down the fabric. They now also create clothing, bags and cushions featuring the same detailing and featuring impeccable colour combinations and prints.

I find that I always love when designers come across a problem or inconvenience, and find a practical and stylish way to solve it. If clothes are breathtakingly beautiful, but are uncomfortable to wear, or get in the way of everyday tasks, then for me they step into the realm of the visual and become art rather than design. I am very much a practical girl at heart. I always prefer sensible flats and chunky heels, anoraks, backpacks for carrying an umbrella/sunglasses/band-aids, yet at the same time I don't (always) want to look like I'm about to go hiking. As such I am always impressed when designers manage this fine line and can combine utility with aesthetics. Now just need to start saving my pennies for one of the scarves.

Thanks for all the London tips on my last post! I had a wonderful time and will post properly about it later, but at the moment I am madly organising myself because rather suddenly and unexpectedly I got a job while in London and am moving down next week! eeek! So keep the tips coming, because I'll have many more chances to explore and wander!

I'm still a little bit in shock, and can't quite believe I'm moving again, but this feels right. I'll be working at a lovely little store in Notting Hill, selling beautiful things with some equally wonderful ladies. I really can't wait. Now I just need to find a place to sleep.

These images are the epitome of lo-fi style done to perfection. Tommy from This is Naive's project/shop The Beautiful and The Good showcases her exquisite, thoughtful, and very special designs. This really is the antithesis to the disposable, fast-food style high-street clothing that seems to be taking over the world, and the internet (not that one can't find beauty or satisfaction at Topshop too, but it is an entirely different approach to retail).

This past weekend I went away to Loch Lomond for four glorious days with the bf and his bro. We hired a wooden rowboat and went island hopping, exploring ancient burial grounds and catching glimpses of deer dashing through the forest. It really was magical (except for a tick incident that brought us crashing back to reality for a few minutes and had us stripping off on the shoreline to make sure we hadn't been bitten). I can't wait to head back into the highlands in summer.

Tomorrow I'm heading down to London for five days of wandering, shopping, looking at art, listening to music and just general fun times. Feeling very indulgent taking two holidays in the space of a fortnight, especially when I am still unemployed (although job application writing sometimes feels like more hard work than the actual jobs). But anyway, going to put the guilt aside and enjoy. I won't be posting until next week, but in the meantime if anyone has any London tips or must-sees please comment and let me know!

So for a while now I've been thinking about Lo-Fi/Hi-Tech style. It started a few years ago when I read this post by Yui on her wonderful blog a slowboat to mediocrity. It remained in the back of my mind as something I love but wasn't sure how to incorporate it into my personal style. Lately, however, I've started thinking more seriously about it. I was going through the archives of Tommy's blog This is Naive and came across her take on the style (way back from 2007!). She describes it concisely as a mix of:

Lo-Fi: tradition, natural fibre, rustic craft.
High-Tech: innovation, synthetic fibre, engineered craft

I've always been drawn to Lo-Fi styles. I love the Mori-Girl aesthetic (although watered down when translated to my actual outfits), I love vintage workwear, basket bags, natural fabrics, beaten-up leather, antique lace and cotton, clothes that are worn by time and use and have faded and been patched back together. AND I'm so far over the whole masculine/feminine, designer/vintage mixing matching blaaaaa it isn't funny. Not that I don't enjoy dressing in that way, I love wearing my brogues and my lace dresses and my secondhand crap worn with higher-end stuff, but really I'm over people talking about it as if it is a revelation.

So now, years after first discovering and admiring the idea of mixing lo-fi and hi-tech, I am starting to truly appreciate it (I'm a little slow on the uptake).

These outfit suggestions by Yui are infinitely inspiring to me at the moment:

I've been a huge fan of Japanese designers, streetstyle and of course magazines such as So-En for years. They are a constant source of inspiration, and one of the things I miss most about Melbourne is my monthly trip to Kanga Kanga to pick up the latest issue of So-En and browse other favourites like Fudge.

The recent events in Japan have been horrifying to say the least, and while the coverage has been heartbreaking it has been uplifting to watch so many bloggers and other creative people supporting Japan through direct donations to the Red Cross, auctions and donating profits from the sale of cakes, t-shirts, zines and more. Claire from Lola is Beauty and Siri from Ringo, have a banana have both posted some really great ways to donate. There are also lots of great products on Pay for Japan with some or all profits going to the cause.

morning rituals

I really loved the 'Good Morning' article in the latest issue of The Gentlewomen, featuring the early morning rituals of fourteen women. It reminded me of the wonderful website Daily Routines which reveals the way interesting folk begin their days. My personal morning routine is rather mundane. I wake up around 7:30am, make a pot of tea which I then drink in bed before eating porridge or muesli with honey, check emails and job sites so I can plan my day, then go for a morning jog through the park next to my flat (rain, hail or snow!). Not quite as exciting or inspiring as some of those in The Gentlewoman, but I guess the beauty of all rituals are that they are common, everyday things that everyone can relate to in some way. Besides being curious, I really love refining my own routines based on those that other, much wiser and more successful people, have developed (like listening to Big Band and eating a piece of dark chocoate), while also discovering the similarities. So with that in mind here are a few of my favourites from 'Good Morning'.

Ann Daniels (polar explorer, Devon) has differing routines depending on whether she's at home in Devon or in a tent on a polar ice pack.... When she's in her tent on an ice pack at 40 degrees below, her first concerns are food and location. "I kickstart the day with hot porridge and tea," she says, "and then in great anticipation I turn on the GPS to see how far the ice pack has drifted overnight. If it's a drift in the right direction, it's a fantastic way to start the day. Miles travelled north while lying in my sleeping bag are a great boost."

Julie Verhoeven (artist, London) tricks herself in the morning by setting her alarm clock 30 minutes forward. "I call it the Greenwich Mean Time con," she says. "With it, I gain fake extra morning minutes. It makes you feel spoilt for time, if a tad confused." (I do this too)

Sadie Stein (editor, New York) relies on big band recordings to start her morning. "Nothing gets you out of bed like 'In the Mood'," she says, referring to the recording by Glenn Miller.

Margaret Howell (designer, London/Suffolk) swims before breakfast. "When in Suffolk, I swim in the chill and sometimes choppy North Sea. Drying off on the beach, I plan my day with a coffee in hand, surrounded by the sound of waves." In London, her preferred swim location is under threat. "I support my local swimming pool, Ladywell in Lewisham. I enjoy its 1960s architecture, with light streaming through the windows," she says. "If it's demolished, I shall live by the North Sea permanently."

Johanna Chemnitz (yoga teacher, Berlin) "takes time before anything else to remember the last fragments of my dreams from the night before, and then let my thoughts wander around to just wherever." To aid this, she has a "cup of rice-milk coffee with freshly ground cardamom in it, along with a piece of fine dark chocolate".

Bless N°43, A/W 11.12 via Bless website and The Fashion Spot

I love the mundane, domestic vibes of the latest Bless presentation. Only Bless could turn the most mediocre of items into amazing design (see rug/mop shoes) and the tailoring and knitwear are standouts as always.

The collection was presented in Paris in a life-drawing set up. Art and fashion students were placed around the models and drew the collection during the presentation. In a clever reversal of the design process, the resulting images will be used in all Bless N°43 publications.

Bless are also collaborating with Weekday on a collection due to be released this month, and in the lead up answered some questions over at the Weekday website. Here are a few of their answers that give a glimpse into their process and reveal why Bless are one of the most interesting, innovative and intelligent brands around.

You work somewhere between art, product design and fashion. Do you think this is a correct description?
We just create products for every day application and use.

There is something unconditional about your design, but at the same time it’s always playful. Do you agree, and where does this mix between hardness and humour come form?
– We agree. We like to emphasize the relativeness of ourselves, our work and life in general. There is no right or wrong, so why take it all too serious. One aspect of your work that seems to distinguish it from that of other conceptual designers is that it is rooted in fashion.
We are just rooted in fashion in the sense that this is what we happened to study.
Nowadays, we don’t feel so close to fashion anymore, at least not in the way it is perceived from the majority of people: trend related. i.e. we can’t answer the famous question that people tend to first ask you when they hear you are a fashion designer: “so, what’s the colour for next spring”.

Could you tell us more about your design process?
Most ideas are born in 5 minutes between e-mails and phone calls, mainly on airports and foreign exhibition locations, and, if we are very lucky, a few come up at home around a nice cup of tea or coffee. The tricky side to design is the long development path that can be unpleasantly eternal. In extreme cases a few years even, until a product comes alive.

You’ve managed to continue to challenge the conventions of the commercial fashion and design systems. How do you do it?
We really don’t know. The most honest answer is probably that we can’t do anything else better.

I've never been into wearing the colour yellow. It looks really wonderful on others, in particular Miss Chloe Sevigny and of course Stevie from Discotheque Confusion (see prime example here), but I've always felt that it just makes me look ill. However since reading Stevie's wonderful posts about fruit prints and banana accessories , and with Prada and Kate Moss on my mind, I recently decided to do an ebay search for any old Chloe banana print items at decent prices. Lo and behold my wish was answered in the form of this tee which is wonderfully printed on the back as well as the front (pet peeve: prints only placed on the front of garments). So I'm putting my aversion to yellow aside, and am going to wear this tee all summer while drinking banana smoothies in the sun. Although considering it snowed in Glasgow on the weekend that seems a while off, so I think I'll wear it as soon as it arrives in the hopes of calling the sun out from wherever it is hiding.

Really love everything here - the pieces all look interesting and practical, and the styling is perfect in a relaxed yet thoughtful way.

There has been lots of Yohji love around here lately. I was very excited to discover a retrospective of his work opened at the V&A yesterday and I'm already planning my trip down to London to see it. In the meantime I've been checking out the curator's blog by Ligaya Salazar, which is a sneak peek behind the scenes of the exhibition - very interesting if you are at all interested in museums/galleries/curating. The man himself will even be there in person on June 26, interviewed by Frances Corner, but unfortunately (and unsurprisingly) the tickets have already sold out.

In My Dear Bomb, Yohji (yep we are on a first-name basis) talked about how when his company filed for bankruptcy and was subsequently 'saved' by a new investor it felt like a new beginning, a new (and final) chapter. From an outsider's perspective, it really feels that way, like he is opening up despite his aversion to fashion exhibitions and museums, which he describes in his autobiography as "where fashion goes to die". While he once declared that he would have no part in retrospectives, and I can understand what he means in that clothes are made to be worn, to live and age rather than be frozen in time, it is so wonderful that he agreed to this exhibition so that plebs like me can see his work in the flesh.

These are some of my most loved items at the moment.

All are comfortable and practical (except the boots which aren't too great in the rain), and just feel right when I put them on. They are also things that I can see myself wearing for years, things that instantly turn an old pair of trousers and a tee into something more special, and things which will just get better with age. I really enjoy when my clothes start to show signs of wear and tear, when they mould to my body and become like a second skin.

Yesterday I read (or more accurately devoured) Yohji Yamamoto's autobiography My Dear Bomb cover to cover over the course of a train trip to Edinburgh and back. It is one of the few books I have ever felt the urge to re-read as soon as I have finished. I really loved the structure; divided into two chapters titled "A Man" and "An Artist" and told as a series of memories and thoughts. There was much to ponder and question, some comments seemed to concisely illuminate ideas that had been lurking in the depths of my own mind, while others seemed alien and far from my own perceptions. This of course is what makes a good read, combining those moments of "ahhh I know that feeling" with ideas that challenge, frustrate and even offend.

Misu a Barbe is a new label from Seoul-born, Paris-based designer Misu Kim, who has worked for some of my all-time faves Margiela, Bless and Bernhard Willhelm. The influence of her time spent with each really shines through in her work, so of course I love it. Focusing on knitwear, Kim uses colour, print and oversized shapes to create very wearable, but slightly off-kilter pieces that look like something your granny would make after one too many whiskeys. Misu a Barbe has been exhibited at RA 13 in Antwerp and is being showcased in Paris this week for anyone lucky enough to be there.

This week I finally watched Paris, Texas (love Jane's hair and brown off the shoulder dress), baked a delicious banana & chocolate cake from the Rose Bakery recipe book, bought and received the perfect tea pot on ebay, was introduced to the best cider ever (Rekorderlig from Sweden), read and thought about Wabi-Sabi, was rejected from lots of jobs and applied for many more, thought a lot about interiors, started reading the Luella's Guide to English Style (which I highly recommend), ran further than I ever have and booked a trip to Loch Lomond.

Just some photos I took this week around my neighbourhood. I love all the old stone walls and faded signs, the unexpected splashes of colour you find amongst all the grey and brown, and the bare trees that I can't wait to see transform as spring arrives.

This weekend was a good one.

It's lovely when a new place starts to feel more like home than an extended holiday destination. When you recognise the people at your local cafe and post office, develop habits and rituals and discover your preferred haunts.

These looks from New York Fashion Week A/W 11 really caught my eye as outfits I'd love to try and replicate. Slightly cropped waist-length knits, long lacey skirts combined with flat loafers/slippers, piling on the checks, and wearing matching printed trousers and shoes (the hardest to replicate).

I've been wanting to learn how to knit properly for a while having only ever made some shoddy scarves in my early teens, so I think the time has come. I'd love to have a go at something vaguely similar to the Rodarte jumper, or even a slightly fluffy Paris, Texas-esque one like the white jumper from The Row. And with the DIY spirit in full force I am also going to start hunting for a cheap secondhand sewing machine, after realising how lucky I was to be able to use my mother's back in Melbourne whenever I pleased. Let the searching and making begin.

While reading the always wonderful Hello Sandwich yesterday I discovered IJM, who are, from what I can gather, a styling company based in Amsterdam. I love their work and spent yesterday afternoon trawling through their portfolio. The colours, the props and handmade items, the use of painting and of course the clothes themselves are beautiful and very inspiring. I now have a strong urge to buy some cacti, paint some vases and wear light pastel layers.

I've been shopping at charity stores a lot, I can't believe how cheap cashmere and wool jumpers are here! I've bought so many for next to nothing, too many actually, so am going to re-open my blog shop soon to sell off some of my excess clothes.

I've been running a lot lately, it feels good to be outside.

I've also been laughing at how tiny my runners look beside my housemate's wellies.

I've been burning my Diptyque Feu de Bois candle way too much. I bought it just before I left Paris and having previously underestimated the power of well-made (read: expensive) scented candles I am now a convert.

I've also been watching a lot of British television series- hello Spooks and Lead Balloon.

I've been baking a lot from the Rose Bakery recipe book. Already made the carrot cake, lemon tart and choc chip biscuits and all were a success. Highly recommended!

Hello long sheer skirts, floral prints that look like they are decaying, wooly jumpers, layered socks and sneakers. I cannot wait for the weather to warm up so I can wear jumpers without a coat and four scarves tied around my head.

I bought some second-hand Adidas shell toe trainers on etsy yesterday after having them in my favourites for far too long.
I think the final tipping point was this fabulous post by Miss Woo.

I had a very similar pair in baby blue when I was around 14, and really really wish I still had them.
Lately I've been longing for way too many items I wore in my early teens, maybe because I've been thrust into the post-study 'adult' world but whatever the reason I am ok with it, there is great comfort in revisiting forgotten favourites.

My mood since moving has been rather up and down. I have so much to be grateful for, and I really love living here, but it is difficult transitioning from full-time study to work. I've never been unemployed and have always either had a part-time job or study lined up, so it is strange having so much time and no committments. It's been lovely too, being able to catch up on reading, running in the park everyday, baking lots, watching films and tv shows, and exploring my new home. Looking for a job in my 'field' is hard at the best of times, and I knew it would be a struggle for a while, but regardless of what my rational mind tells me it is scary trying to crack into the real world.

I miss summer holidays spent running around barefoot, wearing grubby old t-shirts that smell of sunscreen with caps covering damp hair, drinking home made ginger beer and eating fish and chips on the beach. I'm really looking forward to the weather warming up so I can head off on weekend trips and go camping in the highlands and on isolated Scottish beaches.

And with that said, I think one of the reasons why I love this editorial so much (which by the way is much, much longer than what I have posted..check out the whole thing here) is that the focus is on mood and atmosphere, rather than 'fashion'. Because to me, seeing a model pouting in some abstract pose wearing ridiculously expensive clothing might look aesthetically pleasing but...so what?

That is as far as it goes. I'd much rather see some life, some emotion, something more than glamour and sparkle.

Something that inspires not just my clothing choices but also my imagination.

It's grey and rainy in Glasgow this week, but I've enjoyed the change. This morning I went running through the park behind my apartment in the rain and it was exhiliarating, highly recommended. I also booked myself in for a much needed haircut tomorrow. I always get nervous going to a new hairdresser, will see how it goes. This week I also went to see Black Swan and 127 hours, both of which I have mixed feelings about but overall were worth seeing, in all their disturbing glory.

Right now though all of this seems very trivial, and all I can think about is Cyclone Yasi, which is ripping through already flood-devastated areas of Queensland. I've been checking news updates all afternoon, and came across an interesting article on The Guardian website here which asks if this will finally motivate Australian leaders to take a proactive stance when it comes to climate change. I don't want to rant too much here, but I really hope that these terrifying messages from Mother Nature are heard by those in power and that minimal damage is caused.

I love that now I live in such a cold place I have an excuse to buy a really special coat to see me through the dark months. These are 'Life Coats' from Winter 09 by Icelandic designer Jet Korine, who I'm sure knows a thing or two about long winters. The coats are individually dyed and hand sewn and are intended to last, as the name suggests, a lifetime and to be worn in a multitude of ways. They remind me of the Comme des Garcons winter 09 coats, but I prefer the more organic, simple and rugged aesthetic of these.

I've been in Glasgow for a week now and it is already home. I love my flat, my new housemate, my backyard, my new favourite tea house and pretty much everything about this city. Ever since spending a semester on exchange here in 2008 I've wanted to return and I can't quite believe I'm finally back here. I'm still in the honeymoon period; enjoying being unemployed (although I'm sure this will change soon when I run out of money), enjoying the relatively mild temperatures and enjoying discovering Scottish traditions like Robert Burns Night yesterday. My housemate hosted a huge dinner party complete with glow-in-the-dark thistles, home-made Irn Bru lamps, lots of haggies, neeps and tatties, and plenty of whiskey. I wore my tartan-ish Bernhard Willhelm top to get into the spirit of the occasion. Now back to unpacking...

Yesterday I received my UK Visa and found out that I was accepted for an apartment I applied for in Glasgow. I'll be living with my partner-in-crime (term stolen from vliin) as well as a Glaswegian lad who is a sculptor and filmmaker. The apartment is in a really lovely spot and I'm moving in next Wednesday! As soon as my visa was approved I booked my flight over so all of a sudden I find myself in my last week in Paris. I still have an exam on Saturday and much packing needs to be done, but I've also been enjoying my last few days here by walking around my neighbourhood attempting to learn how to take a proper photograph (see attempts above), going to the Rose Bakery cafe (a must visit) and checking out the Cos and APC sales. Still on my 'must do before I leave' list is ice-skating at Hotel de Ville, going to Rose Bakery again and visiting the Père Lachaise Cemetery. Posting will be a little sporadic over the next week, moving countries takes up a lot of time!

The new year has properly started now and so it is time to put my resolutions into action. Time to stop excessive buying, get back into swimming and pilates, eat less chocolate, get a haircut, learn how to knit and spend more time reading, drawing, cooking and explore the Scottish Highlands and the Lake District.

It all sounds so virtuous, but I have to say I've really enjoyed the last weeks of indulging in french food and action films. The last few nights I've watched the Bourne trilogy and The Departed with my boy while eating homemade popcorn, drinking cheap beer, and loving every minute of it. So this year I'm going to remember that between striving to be a healthy, productive human it is also important to just relax and enjoy.

Happy New Year everyone!

I'm currently in a state of limbo. On Friday I sent off my UK working visa application and so am now waiting to hear back with my fingers and toes crossed that everything goes smoothly and that I'll be able to move over there at the end of January. For now I have no idea where I will be next month, whether still in France, settling into the UK or moving back to Australia, so to distract myself from my current uncertain state of being I've been looking at interiors as inspiration for my potential future apartment in Glasgow. I've never had the chance to properly decorate, to create a home beyond my own bedroom, so I'm really excited. Looking through the wonderful blogs Ensuite and Thank you, ok, I've realised I like wood surfaces, wildflowers and crafty touches when it comes to interior design. For now though, this can just be eye candy to comfort me while I wait.
All bureaucracy and no play makes Ally a dull girl.

The last ten or so days have been truly wonderful. I had a lovely trip to Antwerp and Brussels with Vliin who showed me around. We walked down one of the most beautiful streets ever (Cogels Osyle), drank delicious coffee at Caffenation, visited the Fashion museum, went to some wonderful and well-priced vintage stores and the amazing RA13, ate the best spaghetti ever, got snowed on at the Brussels flea market and spent a relaxing afternoon cooking thai food and cake.

After my Belgian weekend I returned to Paris and met my boyfriend who has just arrived from Australia. I've been showing him around and we have spent the last week eating macarons, pastries and cheese, drinking coffee, hot chocolate and champagne, walking around the Marais and Montmartre, looking over the Parisian skyline from the top of the Pompidou centre and enjoying the festive season.
I hope everyone is having a lovely break away from work or study!

I've been drooling over these Chloe for OC items, and dreaming that the weather would let me prance around in platforms, a printed tee, and some kind of flowing pleated skirt. This winter is really getting to me, I never thought I would miss the Australian summer so much. Although, I think my current dressing/fashion-rut is also based on spending the past six weeks cooped up in my room endlessly studying. Luckily, Christmas holidays are nearly here, only one more assignment and two more days and I'm free!

This weekend I'm off to Brussels to visit Vliin and I can't wait, the future is looking bright.

Just discovered the incredible personal style of Marion Kihogo via The Whole Hole. According to the site she is a celebrity personal stylist and fashion editor of Glossy Magazine, and has her own blog here. This is how I would love to dress in my fantasy world where it's no longer snowing, I don't spend most of my life in class or writing essays, and I have a collection of crazy jewellery and clothes that aren't too quirky or too trendy, but are just beautiful.

I just rediscovered Vogue's Today I'm Wearing blog, which documents the daily outfits of one extraordinary woman each month. This month is Margherita Missoni, and past months have featured Lulu Kennedy, Daisy Lowe and Alexa Chung. I love seeing what people actually wear, even if these ladies do have the money and access to wear amazing items it's still so interesting to me to see how it translates to real life.

It's really snowing! It is so exciting to look outside and see beauitful snowflakes floating through the air.

I'd love to be wearing one of these Anywho coats which will be launched in their new store in a few days, over one of these outfits styled by Marie Dehe for Russh. I would also love to get my hands on something by recent Central Saint Martins MA Graduates Lily Heine and Matthew Harding who have been scouted by Topshop.

And finally a quote that really struck a chord with me...
